It’s a Friday and today it is Mr Teoh’s first ever Chinese Chess Tournament with Dato’ Seri Ong Tee Keat and some AIESECers. The day started with the team having to meet in the AIESEC Office at 9am but guess what!? The LRT broke down and Howard, who’s in charge of all this got stuck in the Masjid Jamek LRT Station. The game was supposed to start at 10am! Fortunately, we manage to rescue Howard from the station and made it just in time at NASAM PJ.
It is already 10am and we we’re already supposed to start. Even Dato’ Seri Ong Tee Keat was there and eager to begin but our REAL V.I.P of the day, Mr Teoh is yet to be seen. Howard then decided to invite Dato’ Seri Ong Tee Keat for a practice round. While they were battling it out on the board, Mr Teoh came in smiling and waving his hand in the air. He looks excited and after a quick round of introduction, the first round begins!
Mr. Teoh VS Dato’ Seri Ong Tee Keat – Despite being on a wheelchair and looking frail, Mr Teoh moved his pieces without any hesitation. While playing, he even mentioned that he recognized Dato’ Seri Ong Tee Keat and he knows who he is. Not bad for someone on a wheel chair and who just had a stroke! They played two intense rounds but unfortunately, Mr Teoh lost both games. Mr Teoh can’t really speak much but after the two rounds, he gave Dato’ Seri OTK the thumbs up. After the 2nd round, he pointed to his head and said that it’s very tiring for him to play. Despite all that, looking at someone like Mr Teoh giving Dato’ Seri OTK a fight is simply amazing.
After the break, Mr Teoh is ready for more! This time, against our very own Howard. He seemed to have regained his earlier composure after the short break and this time in his two round against Howard, he actually won one round. After the game, we presented Mr Teoh with a gift and he even asked us for permission to unwrap it. We helped him in unwrapping his little present and then there it was right in his hands. A brand new Chinese Chess Set. It is always a great feeling to lighten up someone’s day and knowing that such simple gestures can help put a smile on another’s face is truly rewarding.
