TLC Promise Me Bookshelf Built and Delivered!

On Sunday the 8th of August 2010, I delivered the completed bookshelf to Madam Elsie house. I arrived at Madam Elsie house around 4pm.  The easy part of the job was getting the bookshelf on the car, but carrying into the house and up the stairs was rather difficult!

To me Madam Elsie looked pleased with the bookshelves I made for her, and I hope it brings her many years of joy.

I am glad to be able to complete this pledge for her, and I had a fun time building these bookshelves for her.

Bookshelf DIY WIP

After assembling the bookshelf, I went through one of the dirty part of the job, where I had to paint the bookshelves black. Almost everyday of the rest of the week I scrubbed my elbows and hands to get rid of the paint, but it was worth it. The shelf looked better than the colour of the wood.

I had to put, about 3 coats of paint to make the bookshelves as solid as possible.

After painting I added the last touch to the bookshelves where I added plastic studs to protect the floor of Madam Elsie house from scratches from the wood.

Furniture made with love

For the past three days, starting from the 30th of July till the 1st of August, I have completed drilling, sanding and assembling the book shelf I have made along with the help from my dad.

I hope the final outcome of the bookshelf will be to Madam Elsie liking. I am now going to the last of the two stages where I paint and deliver the bookshelf to Madam Elsie’s home.

Bookshelf WIP

These past two days I have bought the wood that I’m going to use to build Madam Elsie bookshelf with.   As soon as I had the wood home, I started marking points for drilling.  After that I can begin assembling the bookshelf.

Walking the road to recovery

Just the other day, on the 22nd of July 2010, I visited NASAM and my pledge. At NASAM, before my pledge arrived I witnessed how stroke patients “walked” the road to recovery. I had witnessed the intermediate class for the day. The person who was in charge of helping the stroke patients is “Sifu” Hoh. According to Mrs. Nancy Yap, she says “Sifu” Hoh’s breathing exercises are fun to watch, and are a huge help to a stroke patient’s recovery.

It was whilst watching “Sifu” Hoh at work my pledge arrived.  Madam Elsie, my pledge, looks energetic in her own way and she was very kind.  Madam Elsie asked me to build a bookshelf with measurement roughly 6.4ft wide and 7ft tall, in the colour black. When I will deliver it to her house next week, I hope the bookshelf I build her is to her liking

Even an “ordinary” person can give back…

My name is James Mok and I am a Year 9 student in elc International School.

I got involved with the “TLC Promise Campaign” because I believe that anybody, even an “ordinary” person, can give back to the less fortunate. I even believe I have a duty to give back.

My pledge is not to a child but to a former kinder garden teacher. Her name is Madam Elsie. Her pledge is to have a new bookshelf. I plan not to BUY a new bookshelf, but rather I want to BUILD her a new bookshelf with my own 2 hands.

Maybe it would be easier to buy a new bookshelf….. but what would be the fun in that?
