My pledge finale!

Misha and I arrived together at Rumah Aman at around 1:20pm, pretty much an hour earlier than we were supposed to arrive. With time to spare we dropped by at the nearest McDonald’s and had an early lunch.

At around 2:30, we came back to Rumah Aman, and to our surprise, Mr Rajan, Dazlyn and Shivani were already there. Happily, Misha and I unloaded the bikes from Misha’s car and quickly tried our best to hide the bikes in Mr Rajan’s boot. Unfortunately, we were a moment too late as JUST as we were about to start putting the bikes in his car, the boys were coming home and getting off the van.

In a panicky state, Misha and I tried our best to hide it as the boys came to us and greeted us. While feeling rather miserable for being caught while trying to hide the bikes, we were forced to greet the boys, and our pledges, WHILE holding the bikes. Talk about spoilers!

Once all the elc students arrived, we went to the living room and set the chairs up while Rudy and Jen Ho prepared their presentation for Santokh Singh. Once he arrived, all the boys rushed in and sat down in their chairs expectantly. Few of them even got the courage to say hello to Sanktokh Singh, and even ask for his autograph! After Rudy and Jen Ho’s presentation, Sanktokh Singh stole the limelight, with an inspiring talk for the boys; about what should they do if they wished to become a footballer. After awhile, he asked the boys to go and change for a football match. Eagerly, all the boys hurriedly ran up and got ready as soon as possible.

Once the boys were all dressed in their football kits, we all headed out to the field, and watched the boys all enjoy a friendly football match. After about thirty minutes of snapping photos of them and laughing at Mr Rajan while he was getting interviewed, Kaberi, Erica, Misha, Dyanna and I, the infamous Exuberettes, decided to go inside and split the money we got from our fund-raisers, so we could fairly see how much we each would have for our own pledges.

Once that was done, we were each asked to grab hold of a parcel of books that we were supposed to give to the founder of Rumah Aman. While waiting in line to go in, Dyanna decided to bribe Erica into swapping parcels with her, since Dyanna’s parcel was pretty heavy compared to Erica’s. Feeling bad for Erica, I scolded Dyanna and took her parcel from Erica, and gave my parcel to Erica. It was a terrible mistake to make. Dyanna’s parcel was not only humongous, it was also incredibly heavy. By the time we got inside Rumah Aman, I found myself sweating and tired. As I silently cursed Dyanna, I dragged the parcel inside, while Dyanna effortlessly chit-chatted with Erica.

When we finally got inside to the living room I noticed, to my horror, that we were supposed to present these parcels in front of the entire staff and boys of Rumah Aman! Sweating and tired, I was mortified…. I quickly tried my best to look normal as I smiled for the camera. After it was over, Mr Rajan informed me that I was supposed to present the bike I had gotten for Redha too. I groaned with mock frustration, as I went to yet again pose for the camera.

After presenting the bikes to Redha and Sharul, Misha and I headed home, tired…. but content for having fulfilled our pledges!

Our first visit!

Our first visit to Rumah Aman was an incredibly wonderful and amazing experience. Once we arrived and met everyone there, I was amazed at the amount of love and happiness I felt being emanating from the children there. While given a tour of the place, we met the English teacher and his wonderful students, who were forced to abide by a “five seconds” rule. The “five seconds” was how long they were given to start asking Dyanna, Misha and I questions about us and our day.

The conversations went a little like this:
The child:                  erm… Hi what’s your name?
Myself:                                   I’m Julia, nice to meet you!
The child:                  *awkward silence while he tries to come up with questions*
English Teacher:      FIVE SECONDS TO ASK HER ANOTHER QUESTION!
The child:                  What’s your favourite colour?!

It was rather funny, but it definitely wasn’t the highlight of the day. The moment we were pointed out to our boys was definitely the best part of our trip. After meeting our boys, we got to spend some time getting to know each other.

As only Kaberi’s boy was talkative, the five of us mainly talked to him, rather unfortunately. But after awhile, the others started warming up to us, and started smiling a little more.

All in all I would say the first trip went rather well and we are all looking forward to seeing our pledges again really soon!

Being a ray of sunshine to clear away someone’s grey skies

Hi, I’m Julia Pak and I’m fourteen. I’m also a “Promise Me” candidate, with a pledge to help eleven year old Redha Yaasin, from Rumah Aman, learn to ride a bicycle.

I joined this campaign for many reasons, but the main reason was because I wished to be a ray of sunshine that could clear away someone’s grey skies, someone who could make a difference in another person’s life.

To fulfil my pledge, I am planning on getting a few of my friends to help me teach Redha how to ride a bike, perhaps on our school campus or in a nearby park. Once he gets the hang of it, we will surprise him with a trip to Lake Gardens, a place with beautiful scenery to admire while bicycling. Also, we plan on getting him his very own bicycle, along with a lock to keep it safely.

Md. Redha Yaasin bin Yuoff Cheah

Known for his patience and ability to take good care of his belongings, Redha is one of our boys that will take everything that one gives with a warm welcome, which befits his name ‘Redha’ (The one that accepts). His wish is to learn to ride a bicycle.
