I’ve always wanted to volunteer myself in teaching kids something. Doesn’t really matter if is sport, art, or homework. Just love to see the smiles on their faces after they’ve successfully learnt something.
Coincidentally, AIESEC offered me this opportunity together with the Truly Loving Caring Company to pledge and teach Abu how to ride a bicycle! I was really looking forward to it.
Due to my UKM mobility program which ends only on the 23rd of JULYYYYY.. I have not done much or even talk to Abu. In his heart he must be thinking why is his mentor taking such a long time.
Better not disappoint the kid, I thought. Soon enough the program ends, on the following Monday, I called up Rumah Aman and decided to bring Abu for bike shopping!
That very night, anxiously, my friend and I waited for Abu’s arrival in Giant shopping complex. Eyeing on every kid that passes by, wondering if any of them were Abu.. Finally, got a missed call from Mr Azam! There he is, Abu! Very cute little Abu.
He was really shy and quiet.. Pulling a long face. His foster mother asked him what happened, he said he needed to go washroom.. =.= While he was on his way to the washroom, Mr Azam and I talked for awhile, about where Abu came from, his school hours and so on. Meantime, I was choosing a few bicycles for Abu to try.
The cute boy came back. v^.^v Quickly, together we tried on a few bicycles.. This kid told me that was his first time on bicycle. I was impressed by his learning ability.. He picked up fast! (though it was 4 wheels bicycle.. Hehehe) We had fun cycling the whole shopping complex.. Well, he cycled, I followed.. Still fun!
Why did I choose to teach a kid how to ride bicycle you may ask. When I was about Abu’s age, I learnt how to cycle in a shopping complex. Therefore, I had this thing with kids learning how to cycle especially in a shopping complex. Abu finally picked his first bicycle! A very cool looking bicycle.
After payment, we headed back to Rumah Aman.. My friend and I also went touring in Rumah Aman.. Rest of the kids saw us and greeted us politely. What a systematic and discipline house!
Could not stay longer since it was late already. Abu had english test on the following day and we’ve got last train to catch back to UKM. Said our goodbyes so we left Rumah Aman. Till the next time we will meet again, Abu.
Cheers,
Kai Ying Lim
